Senior Bioinformatician

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design research projects that apply valid scientific techniques and use information obtained from baselines or historical data to structure data to allow uncompromised and efficient analyses;
  • Plan data acquisition methods for specific projects and determine the types and sizes of sample groups to be used;
  • Where possible, adapt statistical methods to solve specific problems in biomedicine;
  • Develop an understanding of fields to which bioinformatics methods are to be applied to determine whether methods and results are appropriate;
  • Analyse and interpret bioinformatics data to identify significant deviation in relationships among sources of information;
  • Evaluate sources of information to determine any limitations in terms of reliability or usability;
  • Evaluate the statistical methods and procedures used to obtain data to ensure validity, applicability, efficiency, and accuracy;
  • Identify relationships and trends in data, as well as any factors that could affect the results of research;
  • Prepare data for processing by organizing information, checking for any inaccuracies, and adjusting and weighting the raw data;
  • Develop and test experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods;
  • Develop software applications or programming to use for bioinformatics modeling and graphic analysis;

Vacancy Requirements:

  • At least two (2) years’ relevant work experience;    Mandatory
  • Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following fields: Biological sciences, Mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, Informatics, Computer Science or equivalent qualification from a recognized Institution.    Mandatory
  • Master’s Degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, Biometry or equivalent qualification from a recognized Institution will be an added advantage;    Added Advantage
  • Demonstrated proficiency in utilization of bioinformatics programs    Mandatory
  • Membership to a relevant professional body where applicable.    Mandatory
  • Supervisory Course not lasting less than two (2) weeks from a recognized institution;    Mandatory
  • Demonstrated work performance and results;    Mandatory
  • Ability to successfully lead a growing genomics and bioinformatics team    Skills & Competencies
  • Excellent organization, time, and project management skills, including excellent scientific written/ oral communication skills.    Skills & Competencies
